About

The Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences (ICBS) is a multidisciplinary institution for research and post-graduate education at Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran. The ICBS was established in 2013. It has become an environment for mutual scientific activities related to cognitive and brain sciences through the following three research departments:

1. Cognitive Modeling

2. Cognitive Psychology

3. Cognitive Rehabilitation

Within the past years, these departments have broadened their focus on neuro-developmental disorders like Autism as a key research topic. Researches on neuro-developmental disorders have been followed through two main approaches, the computational modeling and the psychological studies, using advanced models and techniques such as signal processing, neuroimaging, dynamical and complex systems, neuro-stereology, cognitive development studies, and cognitive-experimental designs in collaboration with highly professional international centers around the world.

To facilitate the collaborations, ICBS has hosted a number of qualified researchers from top universities and research centers, e.g. at Germany and Denmark. In addition, by holding regular journal clubs which are open to the public, ICBS has provided the opportunity of communicating with many national and international visitors at the institute and conducting joint projects oriented toward recently developed techniques in cognitive sciences.

In addition to the theoretical researches, the institute houses several laboratories focusing on EEG signals processingbrain-to-brain interfaceeye-tracking neuro-developmental studies and neuro-stereology. Highly specialized clinical service for individuals with cognitive impairment is offered by the Cognitive Rehabilitation Clinic affiliated to the ICBS.

ICBS offers a graduate PhD degree in cognitive modeling and cognitive psychology and an MSc degree on cognitive rehabilitation. It has currently 2 postdoctoral researchers, 25 PhD and 8 master students. Although, at the current time, the Institute does not offer an undergraduate degree program or a graduate degree program on cognitive neuroscience, graduate students wishing to specialize in these areas pursue their interest by working with the recently developed neuro-developmental and neuro-stereology laboratories which are currently involving in some projects in computational neuroscience mainly in collaboration with the department of clinical sciences, Aarhus University, Denmark. ICBS faculty members with various backgrounds and areas of interests like electrical and biomedical engineering, cognitive psychology and statistics, in collaboration with academians who are not already affiliated with ICBS, have the common goal of training these students in theoretical and empirical frameworks. In addition, the Institute sponsors various educational workshops and short courses within an interdisciplinary training framework in the cognitive sciences for researchers from centers outside the Institute.
